This week our tree surgeons in Norwich have been working in the grounds of Sprowston Manor Hotel and country club. All the trees in the grounds have had a risk assessment survey and are in need of some remedial works.
The main part of the work is reduction work on the roadside tree so the first thing we had to do was fill in a opening notice to Norfolk County Council Highways, this involves making them aware of the works start date at what you will have in place to manage the traffic. On this job we were using three way lights and had to start work after 9.30am and be of the road by 3.00pm to avoid peak traffic times.
The day started with the usual risks assessment looking for risk, highlighting them and putting measures in place to lower the risks. This was followed by the wildlife survey, looking for signs of Bat habitat and nesting birds, after both of these tasks had been completed we could then set out the site in the hotel grounds using tree cutting warning signs and hazard tape.
On this job we were using a MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform) as a lot of the deadwood which needed to be removed was at the branch tips and would have been had work to climb out to every branch. To use a MEWP the staff should be trained, our staff had the IPAF qualification.
Rory and Tom were using the MEWP today and were carrying out some crown reduction work on some large Oaks as there was a lot of dieback in the crown, this involves removing the dead branch end and cutting back to live wood with a good strong growth point .
The rest of us were working from the ground and were responsible for the clearing and stacking of all the arisngs.
