Today our tree surgeons in Holt were called out to deal with a failed tree in Holt… When we arrived the customer told us the tree had been inspected by two other tree contractors who both reported that the tree was sound. Within a couple of months the main stem failed with 70% of the crown lost.
When we inspected the tree we found two different wood-decaying fungi Kretzschmaria deusta and Inonotus hispidus both of which should have been obvious to the trained eye to me the highlighted the fact that you should always use a competent tree contactor. After accessing the remaining tree we decided that we could reduce the remaining crown and leave the decaying trunk as a conservation monolith, this can be an attractive feature and creates an excellent habitat for wildlife.
We started to fill in a risk assessment and carried out a wildlife survey and then set up the site, signs, hazard tape etc. Rory decided to climb so he started making his way up a neighbouring tree to find a suitable anchor point to install his main line as the tree we were working on was unsuitable to use, once this was in place he made his way down the remaining limbs ready to start cutting and after the ok from the ground crew proceeded to start cutting. The ground crew were in charge of lowering, cross cutting and stacking the branches ready to process into chip later and also responsible for keeping the site clean and free from trip hazards, The tree about 4 hours to complete.
