Last week our tree surgeons were working in Attleborough the job was to pollard a mature Oak…
I was called to come and quote on the tree, the owner wanted to remove the tree but I was against the idea it was a lovely small but mature Oak perfectly suited for its location, anyway after a long discussion we came to a compromise and decided that we could Pollard the tree rather than remove.
Pollarding is best carried out on a young tree but on this occasion in my opinion better than complete removal.
Pollarding is the removal of all the limbs leaving a trunk at around 2.5m high. The trunk then regenerates to form a pollard head which can be cut back every 3-20 years depending on species.
The first job of the day was a risk assessment which involves assessing the site and writing down any risks and how the risks can be controlled, after this we carried out wildlife survey checking for nesting birds etc and then set up the site using signs and hazard tape.
Chris decided he would climb so started to make he way up the tree to find a suitable anchor point for his climbing line and pulley block and working rope once this was in place he made his way down the tree to the lower branches ready to start cutting and after the ok from us he proceeded to start.
The rest of us were responsible for the ground work this involved the lowering, cross cutting and stacking of the branches ready to process into chip later. The wood was being left on site so this was also cut into movable pieces and stacked in a neat heap keeping the site clean and free from trip hazards.
Once Chris had finished up the tree he came down and had a drink etc while we all chipped the brash and raked up any twigs and leaves leaving the site clean and tidy.
