Today our tree surgeons doing some tree reduction work on a Chestnut Tree (Aesculus x carnea) where we are carrying out a crown reduction… The reduction is being carried out as the tree has a lot of Canker which can weaken the limbs, the spec was to leave a radius of not less than 4m.We also had to crown lift the tree on this occasion this involves the removal of the lower branches to the desired height.
The work is for Breckland council and the tree is located in the centre of Swaffham. The Crown of the tree is starting to approach on the Swaffham Cornhall a grade 2 listed building which is now used by Costa coffee (handy).
We started the day with the usual council thing a phone call to locate the keep to remove some parking bollards in order to park the trucks after which we needed a coffee.
We then carried out a written risk assessment and Wildlife survey, then set up the site using signs and hazard tape to close of the foot paths and create a safe work area.
Today Rory was climbing so once he finished his coffee he started to make his way up the tree to install his main climbing line, pulley block and working rope once installed he made his way down to some of the lower branches ready to start work. Myself, Fred and Chris were on the ground we were in charge of instructing Rory, keeping an eye on pedestrians as you always get one or two who try to walk under the tree. We also had all the lowering, cross cutting and stacking of the branches ready for chipping later.
Once Rory had finished any climbing work and has safely down we started to chip the branches into one of the trucks and then rake and cleared al the sawdust and twigs so the site was left clean.
