Today our Arborists in Norfolk have been working on a Willow….
We received a call late last night from a regular client regarding a the Willow tree, one of the main limbs had spilt.
A hazard beam (a fault in the trees structure) combined with the recent strong winds and heavy rain had caused the limb to fail.
The tree was located directly over a footpath so it needed to be dealt with as soon as possible So the next day we attended site to make the tree safe.
The next morning we arrived on site and found that the limb in question was very large and not only over the footpath but also a river.
The first thing we did was to close the footpath using signs and barrier tape stopping people from walking under the tree, we then carried out a risk assessment and wildlife survey, as the tree was located right next to fast flowing water we felt it necessary for the ground staff to wear lifejackets (supplied by the client) whilst working within two metres of the bank.
We then had a discussion on how we would dismantle the limb, and as there was not any suitable anchor point for the rigging line we decided that the best way to carry the work out was to tie a tag line to each branch and drop them into the river, these could then be pulled to the bank by the ground staff cross cut and stacked into heaps ready for chipping.
We decided to dismantle the limb down to the spilt leaving this for habitat, we also stacked all the wood into habitat piles along the river bank.
The job took us all day to complete.
